Maritime freight transport is considered to be one of the most efficient in energy, ecological and economic terms, which has led to its strong support within European policies. European Ports handle 74% of the goods imported into and exported from the European Union and 37% of the goods traded within the European Union. Approximately 85% of Spain's imports and 60% of its exports are handled by its ports, and these figures are expected to continue to increase in the coming years. In this context, ports are positioned as essential nodes.

The Port of Huelva has positioned itself as a priority global node for Europe following its inclusion in the Atlantic corridor and it is located in an environment of high environmental value which includes 4 natural areas, 7 Natura 2000 Network areas and 1 Biosphere Reserve. In total there are aprox. 12,000 hectares protected between land and inland waters and 235,000 hectares of protected marine area.

Since its inception, Consignaciones y Graneles del Suroeste, S.A. has maintained an environmental commitment in all its operations, aligning itself with the requirements and strategies of the Port Authority of Huelva in environmental matters, especially those arising from the development of the recent Green Pact - transport 2050 for the improvement of environmental quality in port environments, focusing on environmental performance in loading operations, handling and temporary storage of goods prone to particle emissions. This has meant that environment and sustainability have been important factors present in all our investment projects from the outset, in conjunction with the objectives of the European Union and, more specifically, with the framework of commitment represented by the White Paper and the European Green Pact.

In this context, Consignaciones y Graneles del Suroeste, S.A. has already implemented since 2008 the ISO 14001 environmental management standard, whose procedures will be reinforced in 2021 with the commissioning of a new state-of-the-art ecological conveyor belt in the port of Huelva".  This new ecological conveyor belt will be fully operational in July/August 2021.
